A NEW SIXTH FORM?

For the past few weeks, a handy team of students have been planning something big and exciting for the sixth form...

Mrs Mayne and her working party, involving both Year 11 and Year 12 students, have been putting together a plan on how we can make sixth form a more exciting and modern place for students to study, learn as well as socialise too. After a number of surveys, plenty of creativity and dedication, the team have put together an idea of the sixth form they wish to see and hope others would enjoy too: there have been plans for new tables and chairs in the atrium; a fresh lick of paint across the whole of sixth form and a new creative space in F26 as well as plants, new artwork and a new outdoor space for the summer. It has to be said, there is a lot to be done but the team are hoping that with the support of the community of students in sixth form, the governors and anyone wishing to donate unwanted items, they can raise the money to redevelop sixth form as a place for students to feel motivated to learn and generate creativity and vibrancy to take with them for the rest of their student life.

Currently, Mrs Mayne and her team are waiting to pitch their big ideas to the headteacher, Mr Kerridge, and the team of governors to get the go ahead to make a positive change and impact in our learning environment. Good luck!

IMPORTANT NOTE:

THE TEAM WOULD LIKE TO MENTION THAT ANYONE WHO IS WILLING TO DONATE UNWANTED ITEMS THEY THINK SUITABLE FOR DECORATING THE ATRIUM, HAS A COMPANY WHO MAY BE INTERESTED IN SPONSORING ANY OF OUR PROJECTS OR SIMPLY WANTS TO HELP OUT FUNDRAISING OR GIVING IDEAS FOR OUR PROPOSED MAKEOVER CAN GET IN TOUCH WITH MRS MAYNE, MRS HAYES OR ANYONE ON THE STUDENT WORKING PARTY TEAM. THANKYOU.

SIGN LANGUAGE SUCCESS

This term, the blog would like to make a special mention to the students of the sign language Enrichment class who have all passed their first BSL exam!

The students have a total of three exams before they receive their BSL Level 1 qualification and so far, they have covered a range of topics such as family members, referencing, food, transport and clothes on their journey to passing their second exam in a few weeks time. The members of the class are enjoying knowing they are now able to communicate with those who are less fortunate to have hearing abilities and able to learn a new language in a very different way! The sixth form will soon have its own cohort of trained sign language experts with a big thanks to their BSL Coordinator, Esmail Patel.

VILLIERS PARK VISITS

One our Year 12 students, Emma Brade, kindly wrote an account of her experience at Villiers Park in March 2017 where she did a Creative Writing course. Here's what she made of her time down at Villiers Park...

In March, I went on a five day residential course at Villiers Park in Cambridge, which is a fantastic opportunity to learn more about a subject you're passionate about. Out of the many options that Villiers Park provides, I chose creative writing, as that's the course that I'm hoping to do at university. Over the course of the five days, we were given lessons about various aspects of storytelling, screenwriting, poetry and non-fiction, which were all taught in a way that allowed us to experience what the course would be like at university. I learnt so much! Despite the timetable being packed, I thoroughly enjoyed all of the lessons and am all the more excited to continue studying creative writing in the future.

One of the best things that a Villiers Park course provides is a day trip based around your chosen subject. Our day was spent at the British Library in London; we were given a guided tour during the afternoon and then listened to a talk about poetry in the evening.

However my favourite thing about Villiers Park was meeting new people. The course is an excellent opportunity to be introduced to others who share the same interests as you. Everybody was so friendly and the atmosphere was lovely the whole time I was there. We bonded very quickly and I loved working together on the projects we were set. Even though we were only there for five days, I feel like I've made some great friends that I still keep in contact with and that alone made the whole experience worth recommending to everyone.

SHINE: THE FASHION SHOW

The Shine Fashion Show this year was organised by some of our own sixth form students and here's what one of them had to say about the experience of organising, hosting and performing in the school's fashion show...

Niamh Cain, Year 12
"It was a great experience being able to organise and perform in the fashion show which was organised by Miss Coggins and her team of pupils in Shine. It gave me such a great opportunity to show my leadership and management skills as well as wear so many amazing outfits. We put so much hard work into the show and hope everyone who watched enjoyed the evening! We'll have more updates for you soon in our official blog/article post from Miss Coggins!" - Niamh Cain, Year 12
