TIGER ROAR PICASSO COLLEGE BLOG

"INSPIRATION EXISTS BUT IT MUST FIND YOU WORKING" - Pablo Picasso

"VICTOIRE, VICTORIA, SIEG - LOS CAMPEONES, LES CHAMPIONS, REKORDMEISTER".

It is with more than a little sadness that I find myself writing this final Picasso blog after four years as Head of College. It seems appropriate that this year has been our most successful in terms of victories across a variety of activities, with further events to write about in this blog. It was also sad to see our Year 11's "leave" at both the Prom last Friday and the Assembly this Monday. I look forward to catching up with them in August to hopefully celebrate the Results Day. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all parents and students of this wonderful college and wish all Picassians success in all their future ventures. Keep Roaring........

Without a doubt it has been a great year for Picasso College and I have been very proud to play my part in that. We have excelled in many of the College Competitions and it was fantastic to see so many of our pupils receiving awards at the College Presentation Evening. I have really enjoyed getting to know and supporting Picasso pupils over the last year and a half and I hope that I have made a positive difference to their time in school. I will be the Pastoral Manager for Year 9 in September, but I hope that all the Picasso pupils I have been working with will still let me know how they are getting on when I see them around school. Have a great Summer and take care.

YEAR 8 COMBINED VICTORY

It is no secret that the Summer Term is regarded as our worst in terms of sporting achievement in the past. In 2015/16 Year 7 did not cover themselves in glory at either rounders or cricket, coming last amongst the colleges. However I am glad to report that the successful drive and adrenalin boost of 2016/17 paid off in this year's competition. Both the girl's team and the boy's team managed to score three victories against other colleges in their respective events. By a quirk of fate this meant that four colleges finished joint first - including the Tigers. Not a bad improvement over 12 months and a just reward for the determination shown this year. They certainly took a few colleges by surprise.

ACADEMIC RECOGNITION

It has been a privilege to recognise the academic achievements of so many students over the last four years - particularly when students from different year groups are given certificates from so many subject areas.

Picasso continue to do well in Mathematics - in Key Stage 3 alone there were no fewer than eleven recipients of certificates. Congratulation to Riley Marshall, Emma Aggrey and Isabella Bradley (Year 7), Hannah Humphries, Millie Prescott, Mollie Hankin and Alfie Hall (Year 8) Mollie Savage, Patrick King, Sam Felton and Georgina Hopwood (Year 9).

At Key Stage 4 there were five certificates recognising achievement in Mathematics. Congratulations go to Alex Lang, Antony Lancaster, Ben Mehnert and Katie Beswick (Year 10)

This year English have recognised the achievements and attainment of Holly Anderson and Jamie Hopkins (both from 9P2) and declared them "Star Performers". Well done to both.

Geography Star Performer certificates have also found their way to Picasso College. Congratulations to Eliza Whalley-Smith and Riley Atherton (Year 7) for recognition in Key Stage 3 and Ben Mehnert (Year 10) for his attainment in GCSE Geography.

Last but not least..........it is always extra special when students achieve their Linguist of the Week certificates with MFL being a Picasso-based department. Congratulations go to Riley Atherton (Year 7), Abbi Gardner (Year 8), Josie Carroll, Bradley Telford and Adam Fairclough (Year 9).

Sporting Prowess

Picasso College students were recently presented with their certificates for being part of a successful school sports team. Year 9 were District Netball Champions with Anna Anderson and Annabelle Corlett (who captained the team) being part of the victorious squad. Year 8 were also District Netball Champions and included Rachel McKinney and Alex Gould in their team. Not to be left out Year 7 made it a clean sweep with Emma Aggrey also ending up a Champion. Well done girls.

The PE Department has also recognised the contributions of Jamie Hopkins and Josie Carroll (both in Year 9) by declaring them "Sports Stars" in June and July respectively. Well done to both.

Year 9 girls Annabelle Corlett, Anna Anderson and Amber Bartlett received their certificates recently for successfully completing the LEADING ATHLETICS WORKSHOP which included experiencing athletics delivery across a range of athletics event. Congratulations to all three.

And finally............................

Two of the highlights of the year are unquestionably the Leavers Prom for Year 11 and the Summer Ball for Year 10. It seemed only appropriate that the last college function of the year, and my tenure, would involve the students who started in the inaugural Picasso College with me back in 2013. I wish you all success with your future ambitions and particularly Year 11 GCSEs. Ian G Todd
